REDCap Database

REDCap is an application that enables investigators to design databases and maintain research data using the world wide web. The software is produced and maintained by the REDCap Consortium with support from Vanderbilt University and is widely used for clinical research at academic medical centers worldwide. The REDCap server hosting data for this project is maintained by The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

In the current project, REDCap will be used by the SC or SD to enter details regarding participants in the NMTP as well as performance data from the individual TS completed by participants.

Study Timeline and Expected Reporting

Data Collection Timeline

Study 1: (2 years from baseline performance)

Baseline performance data will be obtained for all participants at the time of their enrollment.  Interval performance data will be obtained at 6 month intervals x 4 so that each participant will have 5 formal sessions in which performance data is collected.

Study 2: (1 year from baseline performance)

Half of participants are assigned to “Group 1” and “Group 2” groups (every other participant)

After baseline performance data is collected, the participants assigned to group 1 are given a formal practice session at 1 month intervals between baseline data measurement and 6 month interval measurement.  Group 2 participants are given the opportunity to practice is they choose, but not formal practice sessions with instructor.  Six month interval performance data is recorded for all participants of both groups.  After the 6 months interval data is collected, Group 2 participants are given formal practice sessions at 1 month intervals, Group 1 participants are allowed to practice if they choose.  Twelve month performance data is then recorded for all participants.

Study 3: (3-6 months from baseline performance)

Needle position challenge

6 needles with small suture tail are positioned on surface in laparoscopic trainer.  Time for participant to pick up and position needle for suturing is recorded. At time of baseline performance, an coaching session is given to help improve performance.  Voluntary practice is allowed between monthly performance data sessions.  At monthly intervals, repeat performance of tasks measured until participant reached proficiency in positioning needle

IPEG Stands with Ukraine

The Executive Committee of the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group condemns the military actions by the Russian Government in the Ukraine. This attack on a sovereign nation is not consistent with the values and principles of IPEG and the international medical community. As an international organization dedicated to enhancing child health through education and access to minimally invasive surgery for all children of the world, we stand in solidarity with our Ukrainian friends, colleagues, children, and people.
